Throughout the years we have seen a number of non Maltese born artists emerging on the local music scene and who are we to complain right?
Chellcy Reitsma is one of those artists. Chellcy was born and bred in California USA, she moved to Chicago, IL in her mid twenties to finish university at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and lived there for 11 years before moving to Malta in 2012.
Many of her closest family members were professional musicians or musically inclined, so she grew up around music . She has always loved music and poetry and used to sing a lot as a child, performed in musicals, make up songs and poems ect, but she chose to focus on visual arts and dancing instead.
Throughout her dance and art career however, she continued to work with a lot of bands and musicians, and took a lot of music classes, attended Middle Eastern music camps to gain a better understanding of the ethnic music and rhythms she was choreographing to and to enrich her dancing mostly in Latin, Spanish and Middle Eastern music, rythms, maqams etc. Chellcy also learned to play finger cymbals, maracas, and tambourine proficently, and a little bit of Egyptian tabla/darbuka/hand-drum and would teach and play these instruments in her classes and performed dancing while percussing with them as well.
In 2014 she began working on some song ideas and then in 2015 she started singing lessons just for fun. When the time came that she had to retire from dancing in 2016, she started taking the singing and songwriting more seriously and produced her first single “Blue”
She then produced her second single in 2017 “The Three of Us” both tracks were with Beehive Studios in Malta.
Throughout the last 3 years she had a few solo and choir performances and was in Amedeus Chamber choir in Malta for 2 years whilst studying singing under Maestro Brian Cefai.
Currently she is in vocal coaching with Julie Pomorski at Vocal Booth Studios, and is taking lessons in music theory and chords for key board for composing with Geoffrey Thomas. On the other hand she is also taking music production courses with Peter Borg at Railway Studios. As you can see this woman is becoming quite an all rounder.
Chellcy Reitsma has just recently dropped her debut single from her upcoming EP “Black Water” which shares the same name . It is one of four tracks on the EP which is set to be released by the end of summer.
You can follow Chellcy on Facebook to stay up to date with all her releases and future projects.
