Events have been postponed, gigs cancelled and music releases mostly came to a halt. Local artists spend a lot of time and money to create music that we get to enjoy. Due to the Covid-19 situation almost all sources of income for musicians and artists has stopped too.
When all this is over I urge every music lover to support these artists to get back on their feet ,keep creating the music we all love and bring us all together to celebrate the magic they create.
The ‘Lockdown Chat’ today is with Errol Sammut- Airport Impressions’ frontman.
They were formed just over a decade ago and after a short hiatus and a line up shuffle, Airport Impressions have gotten back to work, full steam ahead and releasing some great tunes for us to enjoy yet again.
Errol, It’s been somewhat of a roller-coaster ride since the band’s inception back in 2008. What’s kept you going all these years?
Life is a roller-coaster as they say, yes agreed, but the feeling of writing, performing onstage and being in a family of musicians is such a needed way of life for us, that we can’t imagine ourselves without this journey, or a similar one. The songs are like newborns, in our opinion, i.e. they bring joy when they arrive.
With an EP and 2 albums to your name…Have you started any discussions and writing for a third album?
We had discussed this in fact around a year ago before we started releasing some of the newest material. At the moment we are still writing and recording most of the new tracks while also releasing singles one by one. The plan for a collection of songs (or as you say an album), is there but we are taking it very easy and considering even the newest written songs until we are ready for the get-go.
Before releasing a single, how do you decide which track to release?
This is a very enjoyable and sometimes heated moment in fact Eileen. I always like to compare it to a sport league table where teams supercede each other depending on their points achieved. We do grade songs like that sometimes with points given for single potentiality, melody or album song possibilities etc. Then we discuss among us, each one having his own preferences obviously to reach an end result, with a list of releases in order.
You’ve released a long list of hits over the years but from all your songs, which songs would you say are your top 3 personally?
Personally my three favourite ones are Silhouettes, Star Signs and Why Are We Here, although it is so very tough to choose as there are others like Let It Shine and Spin to name but a few, that are very close to the ones I mentioned.
And which song of another local artist would you wish you would have written yourself?
I have always had a huge liking towards No Snow No Alps’ ”Disappear”.
It has such a mood that I like and I believe I would’ve been a proud songwriter had I written that. Kudos to Nick and the band.
And finally. Your message to your fans out there during this time?
Our message to the fans at this strange time is to keep following our social media platforms as we will be publishing some new stuff in the coming weeks. Something they have probably wanted us to do in the past but for certain reasons we couldn’t deliver at the time. Shhhhhh hahahahah
